Falll Season in Western North Carolina

North Carolina’s earliest and most vibrant fall foliage occurs in the beautiful mountains, located in the western part of the state, although leaf peepers may also enjoy very nice fall color a little later in the season in many areas of the North Carolina Piedmont. Because of the high elevation of many of the North Carolina mountains, some of the tallest in the eastern United States, the peak fall foliage period in the higher areas usually precedes peak foliage periods in many more northerly regions.

Winter has arrived here in the mountains. The thermometer outside the kitchen window said 22 this morning and the weather man is forcasting 12 degrees tonight. Yes, it is cold but the sky is a clear blue today and the sun creates warm spots along the path as I walk my dogs. Clean air, blue skies, mountain vistas and more are mine every day I get up – life is good in the mountains.

Cold hear today – Bright clear blue sky for the New Year. I can’t think of a better place to start a new year than here in the mountains.

Murphy had it’s annual holiday home tour this last weekend. This year there were 5 historic homes open, with the proceeds going to help build an ampitheatre next to the Konehete Park! There are truly some magnificent older homes in our neck of the woods!! One home in particular had a “spider web” floor design made with 2 different hardwoods. The original owner had also been the mayor of Murphy during the mid 1800s. Another home helped confederate soldiers escape harm by hiding them in the attic! I’ll never look at an older home the same. So many I drive by, I’m just dying to get inside! I’ll be sure to go again next year!!

Christmas in the Mountains

Murphy is a picture postcard at this time of the year. The quaint downtown area twinkles with lights set in front of the mountain backdrop. Traffic is lite even on a busy day so shopping downtown is always a pleasure. We had some early snow which made the area a dreamland of white. Snow never stays long here so it comes for a day so we can enjoy its magic and then it melts so its seldom a task for a snow shovel.

The pace is slow here but there is always something to do or something to see in the mountains. I have been retired here for the last 5 years and I do believe I am as busy as I ever was but only with the things of life I want to do. This is an ideal location for a visit or for a lifetime – Come sit a spell and enjoy Christmas in the mountains.

Fall Color

Our Fall color is late this year but a real treasure for the eyes as of now. Weather is warm for this time of the year but fall is in the air. With gas prices lower now is a great time to visit Western North Carolina to enjoy the fall color.
